Life skills lessons
These 12 lessons are an educational rather than a therapeutic model of delivery and are accepted professionally by the Alberta Society of Registered Psychologist as a beneficial and effective program in dealing with Human relations.
Curriculum:
Meeting one another
Objective:
- to gain familiarity with members of the group
- Identify self and others through the five life areas
- Gain understanding of the primary needs of a group
- To identify the stage of group development and characteristics of each stage
Attending Behaviors
Objective:
- To develop effective listening skills and understanding of the behaviors of active listening as related to the FIBER acronym.
- To expose participants to the impact of lack of attending behaviors and the presence of attending behaviors
Questions Concepts
Objective:
- To identify the impact of questions on other people and on self
- To distinguish between fact finding, information seeking questions, which are externally provable, and questions which are answered internally, and may impact as a threat or call for justice.
Brainstorming
Objective:
- To gain an understanding of the techniques of brainstorming
- To become familiar with the rules of brainstorming
- To apply the concept of right brain thinking to a memory application of brainstorming
- To gain familiarity with the concepts of mind mapping as an application of brainstorming.
Giving a talk
Objective:
- To gain an understanding of an oral presentation
- To develop strategies to deal with fears about oral presentation
- To prepare and deliver an oral presentation
Identifying feelings
Objective:
- To gain an understanding of the affective domain of learning
- To identify one's own feeling with appropriate feelings vocabulary
- To practice ownership language of feelings
Building relationship through the process of giving and receiving feedback
Objective:
- Demonstrate the appropriate and responsible use of feedback
- Practice giving and receiving feedback
Problem Solving System
Objective:
- To understand, recognize and apply the 7 stages of the problem solving system
- To distinguished the difference between the situation- a set of circumstances, & the problem-the action to take in response to circumstances
- To apply the problem solving system to one's self and in a group
Harmful and Helpful behaviors
Objective:
- To identify harmful and helpful individual and group behavior, and differentiate between them.
- To provide opportunity to apply the skills to move (SHIFT) from harmful to helpful behaviors
Assumptions about other/ Assumptions about self
Objective:
- To gain an understanding of assumption
- Identify assumption about self and others
- Become aware of faulty assumption and understanding the process of creating an act of discrimination base on faulty assumption
- To recognized the different roles that are played in discrimination
- Identifying methods to avoid faulty assumptions about self and others
Anger management Conflict resolution
Objective:
- Gain an understanding of the feelings underlying the REACTION anger
- Apply the principle of anger management
- Illustrate the conflict management model
Balance self Determination
Objective:
- Recognize unproductive behaviors in the OD ( other determined- when others come first most of the time if not all the time while ignoring my needs or wants) and SD ( selfish determined-my way no matter what other needs or wants are) pattern and convert those to a BSD ( balance self determined-balance the needs, wants of others with mine)
